The LPS was very formal and official and all male staff. The tutor came from the telephone business and considered that the prospects on that side were very much better and suggested a couple of positions that might interest me. The postal business was very seriously seniority based and waiting for dead men’s shoes. Apart from undergoing in house training, I was sent on a three week instructors training course at another GPO training establishment, The tutor was discussing promotion prospects with me. You could re-apply for a further term but 12 months had to be spent back at your office. On completion of your term you would return to your normal office, reverting to your previous grade. There was a training and trial period of three months. In due course I applied for the Instructors position and was successful on the second attempt.ġ965 Instructor Temporary Assistant Inspector, London Postal School Shift work, weekends, bank holidays e.t.c. I would be returning to the sorting office. The Instructors were on a temporary promotion at a higher grade than I would be. I was recommended for training and attended a two week course at the London Postal School (LPS). This was semi managerial work with responsibility for secure mails, monies and on occasion staff. To increase my earning without having to perform overtime pay about £12.00 per week, I applied for promotion to Postman Higher Grade (PHG). It was a good time, male dominated and a lot of comradeship. I worked as a Postman/ Driver for just over 5 years. The GPO trained and tested its own drivers. Soon after re-commencing my Postman’s duties I applied for driving. I often wonder if I had been allocated some other role in the army, would I have gone back to postal! I was discharged in January 1958 to return to my Postman’s job at Wembley. After basic training I was posted to the Home Postal Depot in London for postal training, which was much more in depth that I had received from the GPO. I was conscripted into the Royal Engineers (RE’s). It was a friendly environment and if a person was struggling to get their delivery prepared, others would help out. I carried out a range of duties and shifts for the next six months. At this age I also transferred into the Sorting Office as a Postman and received basic training on sorting and preparing mail for delivery. There were no guarantees that you would get your choice, in fact it was more than likely that you would end up in some other role. I opted for Postal Worker, Fire Fighter or Driver. We were asked about our preferences for which service, regiment or trade / skill we would like to serve in. The law required that all youths of eighteen register for National Service (Conscription into the Armed Forces.) A medical followed and an interview. We had to clean our leather and brass buckled belt and pouch and be inspected by the Sorting Office Inspector every morning re general appearance. I started my new career in June 1953 aged 16. In due course I was offer a position as a Young Postman (Telegram Boy) at Wembley approximately 8 miles from my home. I was called for an interview, given a basic intelligence test and referred for a medical. I talked to him about his job and decided to apply to the local Head Post Office regarding vacancies. He used to pop home on his GPO motorbike. Living near to me was a lad who was employed as a Post Office Telegram Boy. The second when I obtained a new job which was the start of my real working life. The first ended due to shortage of work and lack of revenue. In the first year of leaving school, I had two jobs both referrals from the YEO, neither had much future and each lasted six months. School leavers had the opportunity of visiting the Youth Employment office (YEO) (Part of the Employment Exchange, Ministry of Labour) To discuss suitable employment opportunities. Or perhaps some form of apprenticeship or a dead end job. Destined to follow my father into his workplace, an engineering factory. I had a basic education and left school in 1952 at the age of 15, without any examination qualifications. In 1974, their son, Bill Shedd, came onboard and remains today as the company’s president.īy 1978, the Shedds had built a 24,000 sq ft industrial building to house the business. At the time the company operated out of a 2400 square-foot rented building, and its product line consisted of two styles of roller tips and two styles of roller guides. Milt and his wife, Peggie, eventually bought AFTCO in 1973. Not surprisingly, he quickly became interested in buying the company. He had used AFTCO gear and was familiar with the quality and reputation of its products. Milt was an accomplished saltwater angler and Chairman of SeaWorld Inc, which he co-founded in 1964. As fate would have it, her accountant was the same one used by Milt Shedd. When Axelson passed away in 1973, his wife sold the business. He promptly threw out his existing inventory of rollers, even though they were the best on the market at the time, because he knew the revised design was better.ĭue his uncompromising approach, plus his knowledge of manufacturing, and his attention to detail, the AFTCO name began to build its reputation for quality in the international big-game fishing community. One day Axleson discovered that a slight change in the angle of the vee in the roller would improve its ability to turn. AFTCO still takes an updated version of this machine to tackle shows to demonstrate the line wear superiority of roller guides versus ring guides. It was said that even the floor in the production area was painted, and that it was kept clean enough to eat off.Īn early example of Axelson’s focus on perfection was the testing machine he developed that would allow line to continually run over his roller guides to test for wear and ease of turning. The first AFTCO roller guide was sold on October 28, 1958.įrom the beginning, nothing less than perfection was tolerated. Once the basic design and development had been completed, he moved his roller guide operation to a small manufacturing facility in Newport Beach. His effort was more of a labour of love than a business venture. It was here that Axelson toiled, sparing no expense in developing what he considered to be the ultimate roller guide. However, in the basement of Axelson’s home on a double bayfront lot on posh Lido Island, in Newport Beach, was one of the best-equipped machine shops in Orange County. Axelson was a big-game fisherman, who was dissatisfied with the performance of roller guides and roller tips on the market at the time.Īs a master machinist, and owner of the Axelson Mfg Company, he had the equipment and know-how to develop and improve the current technology.Īxleson Mfg employed over 1000 people and manufactured equipment ranging from machine tools, to tooling for the oil industry and aircraft landing gear. In the first part of BlueWater’s series on the brands that built sportsfishing, Rick Gaffney profiles one of the world’s most readily recognized manufacturers of gamefishing hardware and accessories…….įorty-five years in the business have made the letters AFTCO and the highly recognisable AFTCO logo, symbols of quality to the world’s sportsfishing community.ĪFTCO Mfg Co Inc was started by J C Axelson in the basement of his oceanfront California home in 1957. West Marine offers a variety of conventional and flying gaffs by manufacturers such as Blacktip, AFTCO, Cuda, Danco, Sea Striker, and Bubba Blade.AFTCO has come a long way from humble beginnings. After setting the hook, the “gaff person” jerks the hook free of the pole and the line (which remains attached to the hook) is made fast to a cleat. The procedure for using a flying gaff involves bringing the fish (frequently a large marlin or other billfish) alongside the boat at which point the hook is set into the fish. Flying gaffs consist of a very sharp detachable hook (usually made of stainless steel) that is affixed to the end of a pole which can be aluminum, fiberglass or carbon fiber. The hook is usually made of stainless steel, has a very sharp point and often a barb.įor very large fish, a different type of gaff, called a flying gaff is used. The pole can be made out of aluminum, fiberglass or carbon fiber. In its simplest form, a fishing gaff is a pole with a sharp hook attached to the end that is used to grab and pull a fish out of the water and into the boat. When it comes to boating fish that are too large for a net, gaff hooks become necessary. It’s always possible for a rivet to go rouge when you pull it out and you need to protect your vision from this type of accident. Always wear a pair of safety glasses when working with your riveter. If you have large hands, some models will be difficult to hold. Check the riveter’s handle before you buy it.You may wish to have a model with a short nose piece on hand for this type of job. If you have to work in a tight space, a long nose piece isn’t ideal. This allows it to be placed in an upright position when not in use. They may also be outfitted with a non-slip rubber pad under the handle. For example, some models come with four interchangeable nosepieces, three assistance tools, one rivet collecting bottle and two sets of jaws. Look to see if the riveter has anything extra to offer. Other models come with ergonomic handles that prevent wrist fatigue and vinyl grips for added comfort and control. The handle is also on the smaller side, so you can get at those hard-to-reach areas. The Astro Pneumatic Tool 1423 Heavy Duty Hand Riveter features a shorter handle with double compound hinges that increase your leverage. Inside the handle is where you’ll find the extra nose pieces. It also features a handle that doubles as a storage area. The Astro Pneumatic Tool PR14 Air Riveter is designed to pull hundreds of rivets per day, so you can use it for both work and home projects. A solid aluminum-alloy body and a drop-forged steel handle are ideal, as they are made to last for a long time. You want to make sure that it is both sturdy and durable, so that it can withstand daily use, especially if you plan on using it in a professional setting. Sometimes, this type of set also features 100 rivets to get you started.Įxamine the construction of the riveter’s body. They often include pieces measuring 3/32, 1/8, 5/32, 3/16 and 1/4 of an inch. Models that come with five different nose pieces are a good choice. You want to make sure they match the sizes of the rivets you plan on using. If you’re in the market for a riveter, consider the following features as you shop around.Ĭheck the number of nose pieces that come with the riveter. Interestingly, the term “rivet” is derived from the Middle English and Old French word “river,” which was used to refer to something that needed to be clinched. This tool is used to bond two materials together and create a joint that is stronger than what you’d get if you just used a screw. Depending on the item you’re assembling, you may need the aid of a riveter. Press F7 repeatedly until you see the expression factorial(4) in the focus box. Luckily, Thonny can explain this concept intuitively without sweeping important details under the carpet.Ĭopy following recursive program into Thonny and run it in debug mode ( Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+F5). Understanding parameter passing, local variables, returning and recursion all benefit from the notion of stack frame. Turns out the “jump model” is sufficient only with the simplest functions. Is it the whole story? Do we need to care? Traditional debuggers show us that when you step into the call, the focus jumps into the function definition (and later magically back to the original location). On the surface there is nothing complicated - you give name to a code and refer to it (call it) somewhere else in the code. Does it look like something which understands the purpose of your code or more like a dumb machine following simple rules? Function callsįunction call is a programming concept which often causes great deal of confusion to beginners. You should see a triangle made of periods appear in the shell pane.Ĭontinue pressing F7 and observe how Python moves forward with really small steps. Copy following program text into the editor and save it into a file (Ctrl+S). When first launching Thonny, it does some preparations and then presents an empty editor and the Python shell. Install it with sudo dnf install thonny or with a graphical tool of your choice (such as Software). Thonny is included in Fedora repositories since version 27. Thonny is a beginner-friendly Python IDE, developed in University of Tartu, Estonia, which takes a different approach as its debugger is designed specifically for learning and teaching programming.Īlthough Thonny is suitable for even total beginners, this post is meant for readers who have at least some experience with Python or another imperative language. Unfortunately, most debuggers are optimized for professional usage and assume the user already knows the semantics of language constructs (e.g. Programmers usually tackle this situation with a tool called a debugger, which allows running their program step-by-step. Commonly, this means you overlooked something or misunderstood a language construct, and you need to locate the place in the code where your expectations and reality diverge. Even when you finally get your colons and parentheses right, there is still a big chance that the program doesn’t do what you intended. The code in this program contain several utime.sleep(0.1) instructions to slow things down enough so that we can see what is going on.Learning to program is hard. The full code is in the demo program below and a video of the program running is on the next step. I've made a simple command to call the rather complicated routine. Thankfully, you do need to understand the maths to use it. This all sounds quite easy but it involves a great deal of mathematics. If we do not have a horizontal edge we split the original triangle into two triangles with a horizontal line and then draw the triangles separately. This is easier if we have a triangle with either a horizontal top edge or horizontal bottom edge. The method is similar to that used with filled circles - we draw horizontal lines between the edges to fill in the space. def triangle(x1,y1,x2,y2,x3,圓,c): # Draw outline triangleĭrawing a filled triangle is much more difficult. def ring(x,y,r,c):ĭrawing triangle outlines is very easy - we just draw three straight lines. If we only draw the end points on the circumference of the circle we will get a ring. def circle(x,y,r,c):Ī = int(math.sqrt(r*r-i*i)) # Pythagoras! Drawing a series of such lines, for every pixel line, will fill in the circle. If we then draw horizontal lines of length a in both directions from the vertical diameter it will touch both sides of the circle at its circumference. If we draw a radius in a circle and then draw in vertical and horizontal lines to form a right angled triangle as shown in the diagram we can use the theorem of Pythagoras to calculate the length of side a for every value of i. The two primary methods are charging for sponsorships and ticketing. When it comes to hosting virtual events, there are many ways to offset the costs of the online event platform. The outcome is usually expected to make a positive impact on the bottom line of your business. How can I offset the costs of virtual event platforms?Īt the end of the day, investing in virtual event platforms comes from a business goal or need. These are optional costs if you need help with training, portal branding, assistance building registration pages, or if you need help to record sessions. When it comes to budgeting for your virtual event platforms, it’s best practice to overestimate the number of attendees.Įvery virtual event platform also offers additional services. Naturally, this is never going to be 100% accurate so you will only know the final price after all of your events took place. It’s common that you have to predict the number of attendees for all of your virtual events throughout a year. This means that your costs will go up as your number of attendees are increasing. Virtual event platforms often charge a monthly subscription fee supplemented by a cost per registration. What are common virtual event platform pricing models? If you eat all the dots in each board you will advance to the next level. The whole goal for Pac-Man is to complete each level by consuming as many dots as possible. The red one is called Shadow with the nickname of “Blinky”, the pink one is called Speedy nickname is “Pinky”, Bashful is the cyan colored ghost and it’s nickname is “Inky”, and lastly there is Pokey who is the orange colored ghost with a nickname of “Clyde”. In the game he runs away from four different ghost characters. I wanted to do Pac-Man as a tutorial because he is very popular and I think that he is going to be an enjoyable character to draw. So much so, I even bought the Playstation game that came with a bunch of other classics like Asteroids, Space Invaders, and Rampage. I used to love playing Pac- Man whenever I went to the arcade. Pac-Man blew up in a big way and is now being sold as a combo classic for the Sony Playstaion units. Before Pac-Man hit the arcades it was the games Space Invaders, Asteroids, and Space Shooters that was the most popular played games. Pac-Man became so popular that an animated series was released as well as a bunch of merchandise that became readily available for purchase. Pop culture adopted Pac-Man as being one of the best games ever to be played at home and in the arcades. The first version was sold in Japan in 1980 and later came to the U.S. The game character is a product of Namco which was released for console game systems like Sega, Atari, and other new brand units. I will just tell you who you are getting a lesson on today, I will show you " how to draw Pac-Man step by step". Of course you know who I am talking about because there is a picture of him off to the left hand side of this description. He has a round shaped body, he is yellow, and he eats ghosts for a living. There is a video game character that has been around since the early eighties. |
